I’ve been following R. Abilash Chandran sir’s blogs for years and always wanted to read his debut novel Kaalkal, which won the Yuva Puraskar Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014. I finally got the chance when it was released on Kindle recently.
As a visually challenged person, I already understand the world of the visually impaired. But Kaalkal offered me a powerful new perspective — it allowed me to step into the world of people with locomotor disabilities through the beautifully written character of Mathu.
Choosing a female protagonist and placing her at the heart of the story added emotional depth and a unique resonance. That intention was clearly felt throughout the novel.
Though I found it slightly lengthy, I truly enjoyed the reading experience. I feel deeply satisfied after completing Kaalkal, and I’m excited to read his latest novel, Nilal Bommai.
